Outings

Gorgeous outingProbably the most common first question asked of a club member is "Where do you fly fish around here"? The short answer is, "Anywhere there are fish." Texas has many opportunities for fly fishers but access to these resources can be extremely daunting to the newcomer. Maps show the many rivers in Texas but by and large, these rivers are surrounded by private land and owners taking a dim view of trespassers. The best answer is, "Join the club, and come on our outings".
Monthly outings typically are held on the first weekend following the monthly meeting. There is an elected Outings director who is in charge of all outings for the year but each outing has a host in charge of the details for the specific outing. The host is experienced with the site, where to stay and what type of gear is required. Outings are relaxed and free-form - not guided tours. Some people take off Fridays to make a 3-day weekend on trips that are longer distances. People interested in a particular trip should meet with the host as soon as a trip planning starts and can arrange car pools among themselves. Two at once
The outings themselves are tremendously varied. We go to rivers, lakes, ponds, and the gulf coast. Sometimes we camp, sometimes we stay in a motel or lodge but some outings are only one day events. Some outings are within a hour's drive of Fort Worth while others require a drive to the hill country, the coast, Arkansas or Oklahoma. For some wading is best, for others a float tube, kayak or canoe would be more appropriate.
Many people relate fly fishing with trout and we do have outings where Rainbow or Brown Trout are the featured species, but most of Texas is a warm water fishery with bream of many species, Rio Grande perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, Guadaloupe bass, white(sand) bass, hybrid striped bass, carp, drum, catfish and gar - all caught on a fly rod. Salt water species vary even more widely but the primary targets are redfish, speckled trout and flounder. Brazos GarLake Fork Largemouth Bass Striper
